Dixie Forum: A Window to the World

Dixie State University’s Barnum Honors Lecture series kicks off the 2014-2015 school year with a combined presentation with DSU’s weekly Dixie Forum: A Window on the World series.

Jing Zhang, one of China’s top criminologists, will speak on “The Span of Cultural Conflict and Crime” at noon Aug. 28 in the Zion room on the 5th floor of Holland Centennial Commons on the DSU campus.

Zhang has been dedicated to the study of criminology, particularly immigrant crimes caused by cultural differences, for 30 years.

He worked at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, a think tank affiliated with the State Council of China, for 10 years before moving to Japan, where he specialized in the study of crimes committed by Chinese immigrants in Japan from a global perspective and explored new ways of dealing with the cultural conflicts between the two nations.

The research led to him writing the book “Crime of Foreigners in Japan,” which won the Sixth Kikuta Criminology Award.

After returning to China in 2004, he gained extensive experience dealing with cultural conflicts by participating in and initiating many national research projects that provided the government with theories and solutions of practical significance.

Dixie Forum is a lecture series designed to introduce the DSU and St. George communities to diverse ideas and personalities and to widen their world views. Dixie State students can earn one college credit by signing up for HUM 1000, attending lectures regularly, carefully considering the ideas expressed and writing about the presentations.
