RESILIENCE: THE BIOLOGY OF STRESS &
THE SCIENCE OF HOPE
Tami Curtis, MSW, LCSW is a Dixie transplant from Cache Valley who fell in love with Southern Utah when she attended Dixie College many years ago. She earned her bachelor degree in Family Consumer and Human Development, with a minor in Psychology from Utah State University (USU) and completed an internship in a high school counseling center. She earned her master’s degree in Social Work from USU and completed internships for a residential treatment center for adolescent and adult females with eating disorders and an outpatient non-profit agency providing therapy for children, adolescents, and adults who have experienced trauma and have been victims of abuse. Following her graduate program, Tami provided mental health and behavioral services in outpatient, inpatient, and residential settings, conducted crisis evaluations in the Logan Emergency Department and provided Behavior Services to children, adolescents, and adults with special needs. She currently works as the Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Coordinator for WCSD. Tami is passionate about prevention and early intervention in the largest Human Service organization in St. George, the WCSD. Tami believes education is the best way to empower a person and takes a strength-based approach to practice, including the philosophy that all people are doing the best they can with the skills they have. When teaching occurs in an environment where students feel safe and connected, they learn and thrive. Tami is married to an elementary school teacher, they have 3 amazing children and they all love playing in the outdoors together.

RESILIENCE is a one-hour documentary that
delves into the science of Adverse Childhood
Experiences (ACEs) and the birth of a new
movement to treat and prevent Toxic Stress.
Now understood to be one of the leading causes
of everything from heart disease and cancer to
substance abuse and depression, extremely
stressful experiences in childhood can alter brain
development and have lifelong effects on health
and behavior. However, as experts and
practitioners profiled in RESILIENCE are
proving, what’s predictable is preventable. These
physicians, educators, social workers and
communities are daring to talk about the effects
of divorce, abuse and neglect. And they’re using
cutting edge science to help the next generation
break the cycles of adversity and disease.
