BLM Brown Bag Lecture Series
This week's Brown Bag Lecture series "CAVES ACROSS THE GRAND CANYON- PARASHANT NATIONAL MONUMENT"
The simplest definition of a cave is a hole in the ground, but caves are far more complicated than just simple holes. A more complex definition is that caves are any natural space below the surface which extends beyond the twilight zone, and that is accessible to humans. Some would debate that spaces beneath the surface of the earth, without openings to the surface, should be considered caves as well. Come and find out what is really in those caves. Dr. Diana Northup is Professor Emerita in the University Libraries and visiting Associate Professor of Biology, and leader of SLIME (subsurface life in mineral environments).

The lectures provide unique opportunities for members of the public to learn more about the area’s natural resources and public lands. Speakers include geologists, range specialists, biologists, archaeologists, rangers and other specialists who delve more deeply into subjects tied to the Arizona Strip and surrounding public lands. The lectures bring the resources and public lands issues to the community’s doorstep, benefiting those who want to learn more before venturing out or wish to enjoy an armchair tour of some of the region’s remote and rugged landscapes. The lecture series is sponsored by the Dixie/Arizona Strip Interpretive Association, Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service and U.S. Forest Service.
