Voyager Lecture Series’ Latest, “End of the World” Sheds Light on Human Survival

We all know that a collision with a large asteroid could destroy human civilization, and there are many other potential threats. As Ron Smith enumerates other hazards that could imperil our existence—rogue planets, black holes, X-ray bursts, coronal mass ejections, and supernovae—you might conclude that we have been extremely lucky to avoid extinction. These “end-of-the-world events” have given rise to a theory about our chances of discovering an extraterrestrial civilization. It’s called “The Great Filter.”

Analyzing end-of-the-world scenarios provides insight into our probability of finding another technological society. Are we one of multitudes of civilizations, or are we the only one lucky enough to have avoided an end-of-the-world scenario? Find out on April 30th.
