Over the past 700 million years, our earth has rarely displayed permanent ice caps like we see now. When you take this long-term perspective, we're in an ice age right now. Geologists consider our earth to be in an “interglacial period,” a time of warmer temperatures that separates colder periods within an ice age. Now, human activity may overwhelm Earth’s natural cycles. Does that mean our interglacial period will come to an end? The answer to this question is complex. While we cannot ignore greenhouse gases, our sun may have a surprise in store. Even with increasing greenhouse gas emissions, we might experience a mini ice age in the near future.
