DSU President's Colleagues Meeting

Dixie State University will hold its fifth President’s Colleagues of DSU meeting featuring a presentation on effective educational course delivery by Colleague Dr. Neal Lambert.

Lambert, who completed his Ph.D. in American Studies at the University of Utah, specializing in the literature of the American West, will present on the topic “Cowboys, Outlaws, and American Fiction: Suggestions about Our Ideas and Ideals in the Representation of America’s Frontier.” He began his teaching career at Weber State before moving south to Brigham Young University in 1966, where he retired from the Department of English in 2000. 

During his career, Lambert taught courses in Early and Nineteenth-century American literature, Western American literature, and Mormon literature. He has published articles on American literature, Utah and Mormon history and literature, and on the literature of the American West. Lambert, along with author Richard Cracroft, prepared and edited A Believing People:  Literature of the Latter-day Saints, published in 1974. This anthology became the text for the first university courses focusing on Mormon literary expression.

While at BYU, Neal served on the editorial board of BYU Studies, and as chair of the Faculty Advisory Council. He was one of the founders of BYU’s program in American Studies. He has also served as English Department Chair and as Associate Academic Vice President under then BYU President Jeffrey R. Holland. 

The President’s Colleagues of Dixie State University, established more than 20 years ago by former DSU President Dr. Douglas Alder, is a group of retired professors and other professionals who live mostly in the St. George and Washington County area. Dr. Alder, who also started an Honors Program at DSU, organized the Colleagues as a way to increase academic activities on campus.

The Colleagues meet together once a month during the academic year to hear presentations from each other and/or invited guests. The next Colleagues meeting is scheduled for Monday, March 3, with a presentation on by DSU Associate Professor of Family Consumer Science Tim Eicher and his wife Penelope, who will share their experiences working with the Heartwalk Foundation and their humanitarian efforts in Peru.
