Dixie State College of Utah will host its third President’s Colleagues of DSC meeting of the 2011-12 academic year on Monday, December 5, featuring a discussion on “Operation Smile” by Colleague Dr. Marvin Hanson.
Dr. Hanson has served 21 humanitarian missions on behalf of “Operation Smile,” an international organization that provides cleft lip surgery to children all over the world. He taught speech pathology at the University of Utah for 30 years, the last 10 of which he served as the Chair of the Department of Communication Disorders. Dr. Hanson earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Communication and a Master’s Degree in Speech Pathology from the U of U, and completed his Ph.D. in Speech Pathology at Wayne State University, where his doctoral dissertation was on the cleft palate.
In addition to his work with “Operation Smile,” Dr. Hanson volunteered with the Utah/Bolivia Partnership, for which he helped to build 110 elementary schools in the Altiplano region of Bolivia.
The President’s Colleagues of Dixie State College, founded nearly 20 years ago by former DSC President Dr. Douglas Alder, is a group of retired professors and other professionals who live mostly in the St. George and Washington County area. Dr. Alder, who also started an Honors Program at DSC, organized the Colleagues as a way to increase academic activities on campus.

The meeting will begin at 12 noon, in Room 156 of the DSC Russell C. Taylor Health Science Center, located on the Dixie Regional Medical Center’s River Road campus at 1526 Medical Center Drive.
The meeting is free and open to the public.
