Dixie State Symphony Orchestra Annual Winter Concert
The Dixie State University Symphony Band will take the stage for the ensemble’s annual winter concert.
The DSU Symphony Band is under the direction of longtime conductor Gary Caldwell, who is in his 34th-year as director of bands at DSU. The symphony band will take concert goers to the “Crossroads of the Future” with eight riveting compositions, beginning with Rossano Galante’s majestic piece “Beyond the Horizon,” and composer Barry Kopetz “Flat Out and Wide Open,” which tells the story of the composer’s experience of rebuilding and driving a classic Ford Mustang.
The band will also perform “A Dakota Rhapsody,” a Mark Camphouse ode to his beloved Dakotas, along with Shostakovich’s “Folk Dances,” and “The Hounds of Spring,” an Alfred Reed three-part overture based on a poem written by Alernon Charles Swinburne about Greek mythology. In addition, the ensemble will play “Crossroads of the Future,” composed by Patrick Roszell to celebrate the 150th anniversary of his native Oxford, Ala.; Frank Ticheli’s “San Antonio Dances,” a stirring tribute to San Antonio, Texas, featuring a creative blend of Texan and Hispanic cultural influences; and the Samuel R. Hazo composition “Arabesque” will conclude the evening’s performance.
