SUMMARY:DocUtah Celebrates Islamic New Year
DESCRIPTION:To recognize the beginning of Al Hijra (the Islamic New Year) from October 28th   30th\, The Utah Humanities Council and Dixie State University-DOCUTAH are proud to collaborate on "Muslim Journeys"   a festival of films\, discussions\, visual art and photographic displays exploring Muslim themes. \n\n \n\nDOCUTAH is thrilled to present three endearing films to be screened at 7:00pm each evening in the DSU Eccles Fine Arts Center Concert Hall: Prince Among Slaves\, Koran by Heart and Islamic Art: Mirror of the Invisible World. Each film will be followed by a discussion led by special guests of the event: Dr. Kathleen Herndon\, Dr. Joel Lewis\, Shadman Bashir and Andrew Kosorok. \n\n \n\nBeyond the films patrons can enjoy glass sculpture by Andrew Kosorok on display in the Sears Art Museum Gallery. The show is entitled 99 Most Beautiful Names\, each sculpture representing a name of God from the Qu'ran. Kosorok served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Alabama. "The sculptures are tangible records of my personal struggle against prejudice and ignorance. They allow me to share my journey toward understanding others." In addition attendees will delight in the talents of other invited artists whose work will be on display in the Eccles Grand Foyer.\n\n \n\nThe three-day event will kick off with a special Dixie Forum lecture in the DSU Browning Learning Center Dunford Auditorium at noon on October 28. Dr. Kathleen Herndon\, a member of the English faculty at Weber State University and English Department Chair will present her expertise in Islam.  Dr. Herndon has lived in Isfahan\, Iran\, and Dubai\, United Arab Emirates\, for ten years.  Her academic interests are in Middle Eastern Women Writers and English Education. \n\n  \n\nThe DSU library is participating with a series of books from the Bridging Cultures Bookshelf Series. More than 25 titles on the topic are available for checkout. Membership to the DSU library is available to DSU Faculty/Staff\, DSU students and to the community at large.
