SUMMARY:Chamber Connect featuring WCSD Larry Bergeson
DESCRIPTION:Washington County School District Superintendent Larry Bergeson will be our Chamber Connect speaker.  His presentation will include:  information about some of the new school building projections and school remodeling projects that are underway\, his insight on the recent lockout incident that affected several schools in the District\, and the Governor's finding relative to the Common Core.\n\n\n\nWashington County School District is headquartered in St. George\, Utah\, with just over 28\,000 students enrolled.\n\nThe district provides public education for students in kindergarten through twelfth grade in Washington County cities and towns\, including St. George\, Bloomington\, Bloomington Hills\, Winchester Hills\, Dammeron Valley\, Washington\, Santa Clara\, Ivins\, Hurricane\, La Verkin\, Central\, Veyo\, Pine Valley\, Leeds\, Hildale\, Springdale\, and Toquerville\, covering an area of over 2\,400 square miles (over 6\,200 square kilometers).\n\nSuperintendent Larry Bergeson was born in Blackfoot\, Idaho.  Shortly after\, his family moved to St. George where he attended East Elementary.   He later returned to Idaho graduating from Teton High School in Driggs. He attended his freshman year of college at the College of Southern Idaho where he played basketball. During the following two years he completed an LDS mission in Australia. When he returned he marred his high school sweetheart\, Terry!  Mr. Bergeson then spent the next three years playing basketball for and attending Utah State University where he received his Bachelors and Masters degrees in Special Education. Yes\, he is a true blue Aggie!  He received his Administrative Endorsement from the University of Wyoming. He has been known to call himself a Wyoming Cowboy\, especially when they are playing BYU! Larry began his education career at Preston High School\, in Preston\, Idaho. He never met Napoleon Dynamite\, but did supervise lunch where the tots were exchanged. After 4 years in Preston he then moved to Cody\, and eventually Lyman\, Wyoming. During the 15 years spent in Wyoming 4 years were teaching\, 3 as Special Education Director\, and 8 were spent as principal of Lyman High School. He was then lured by warmer temperatures to Washington County and served as principal to a wonderful staff at Hurricane Middle School for 6 years. Larry filled a 1 1/2 year assignment as a principal on special assignment during this time working on the District teacher evaluation tool\, and assisted with administrative professional development. In the fall of 2007 Larry was named principal of Dixie High School where he currently serves. He and his wife Terry are proud parents of 4 children\, and 3 1/2 grandchildren.
